Photo by @StephSinclairPix // My talented friend, Stephanie Sinclair worked on a story for @NatGeo that changed her life. She now wants to change the lives of her young subjects and she has recruited some of the best female photographers of our generation to help. We all have donated artwork to raise funds for this effort. Tonight, I am asking you to go to my the link in my bio to support young women forced to marry while they were still children. Ya Kaka (centre), 19, was abducted by Boko Haram with two of her sisters in 2014. “After invading Bama, the Boko Haram insurgents came to my house, one of them saw me and said, ‘I want to marry you.’ I said I will not marry you. My parents will not give me to you. Then he said, ‘O.K., that is easy. Let me kill them, so that you will now be the one to decide.’ We got married in the Sambisa forest. Three months later, he came to tell me that he wanted to go attack a community. My husband was killed in that attack. I was pregnant by that point. Ya Kaka’s fate could have been different had the Nigerian government moved faster to rescue them. “We were not taken to forest immediately, but there were no attempts to rescue us in the month we were there.” she said. “Had they responded immediately, we could have been rescued there. The government should assist and rescue the girls that are still in the bush.” “I can now sleep with both eyes closed instead of one eye open,” she said. “If I am [supported], I can do wonderful things.” Supported by Too Young to Wed, she now attends Ramat Polytechnic in Maiduguri. #Follow these female photographers to see how they are helping end underage marriage: @StephSinclairPix @MaggieSteber @JodiCobbphoto @erikalarsen888 @lynseyaddario @andreabruce @photospice @deannefitzmaurice @habjouqa @ljohnphoto @kirstenluce @katieorlinsky @newshatavakolian @amytoensing @stufankjian @victoriawill @dzalcman @tasneemalsultan @joannapinneo #tooyoungtowed #girls #girlseducation #endchildmarriage #letgirlslearn #girlpowerPhoto by @StephSinclairPix // My talented friend, Stephanie Sinclair worked on a story for @NatGeo that changed her life.
