andrewknapp “Ultimately we know deeply that the other side of every fear is freedom.” – Marilyn Ferguson
-
I strive to associate tangible goals to intangible blocks. I need to be able to vocalize solutions to the often obscure, invisible walls that land in front of me.
-
These walls, often based in fear, are anxiety inducing. I let them do that sometimes. It makes everything harder, more daunting, and seemingly impassable.
These fears are important, however. It’s important to recognize them, and to acknowledge them. They’re shedding light on something that’s very real to me. But once I’ve acknowledged them, I’m done, and it’s time to move on to the next step.
-
The next step is the most important one: action.
-
For some reason I always think about the trip I took to watch the eclipse. I sat on my bed wondering: what if I don’t pack the right things? What if I have car troubles? What if I have problems at the border? What if I can’t find a place to camp? And the list went on and on and on. I did this for well over an hour. I paced, I checked my phone to distract myself, I did everything but what I needed to do. Eventually, I knew what I had to do. I started packing everything I thought I needed for Momo and I and reassured myself that if I forgot something, I could find a solution then. I brought my toolkit incase something happened to the car. I packed my passport and reassured myself that there was no reason for border problems. I found a spot on a map to camp that night, and before I knew it I was on the road, headed to my destination. I saw the eclipse. It was pretty great, but that trip, for me, was really about facing fear with action.
-
The most liberating thing I’ve found in the face of fear is to make a plan and follow through with it. And give yourself room to screw up, cause it will happen. -
Have you conquered fear? What tools have you developed? Feel free to share some of them below.

andrewknapp Faults are revealed in times of activity. When we put something to use, it shows us its fragility. Some flaws are easier to fix than others, of course, but we’ll never find them by sitting still.

A cracked vase does no harm decorating a shelf. It’s only when we try to fill it that we’re revealed an opportunity to fix it. (Thanks for the photo, @zachdriftwood)

andrewknapp #Ad Do you let your dog on the furniture? How about if it’s a mid-century modern coffee table from @Target’s new super-functional space-friendly #Project62 collection? I figured out a way to let both these things happen, and it’s with Project 62’s Marble and Rose Gold Coasters (which comes in a pack of 4 like the maximum amount of paws on pets). 4 paws + 4 coaster = protected furniture & happy animals.

andrewknapp 🌶 This spicy boy and I are still stuck in Albuquerque, I’m told they call it the Land Of Entrapment (I’m ok with this). Anyway, we’re making the best of it, and we’ll be hanging out at Flying Star Cafe on Rio Grande around 4pm-6pm, I’ll be the guy sitting alone with his dog. 👨🏻🐶

andrewknapp Late night black and white diner stop on a long day in New Mexico. Got stormed out of a campsite at 4am, found a motel at 5am, cockroaches literally scurried from the blankets as I was checking for bugs, drove West until my tire blew out and tore my wiring harness out of my fuse panel, survived, felt grateful, waited on the roadside for a few hours, met an incredible tow truck driver who has 7 kids and 21 grandkids (check my story!), and finally had a meal at this black and white diner in Vaughn, New Mexico. Excited to spend a few days in Albuquerque while my vehicle gets sorted out. I don’t like to play favourites but New Mexico is a state I can’t get enough of.

andrewknapp #ad I dig a functional space. And @Target’s #Project62 fully embodies a principle I learned in design school years ago: Form Follows Function. It’s a throwback to 1962, not only the midst of the mid-century modern era, but also the year the first Target store was opened. So whether you’re looking for a drawer to hide a little fluffy dog named Gus, or a hiding spot under a side table, Project 62 has something to make every square inch of your home functional.

andrewknapp Momo in a cotton field. I capture this now to remember it later.
(Tell me I take too many photos of my dog’s face. If you, like me, can’t get enough of it, you can always look at it at @momosface and also you can grab our book(s) at andrewknapp.com 😬)

andrewknapp #Ad @Target asked me to take their new small-space brand #Project62 to my childhood home and give my old space a little love.
These fun, functional products brought a new breath of life to the room I spent many years in as a kid. Momo and I flipped through old books under the lucite lamp and someone seemed extra comfy on the grid quilt.
If you asked a younger me if I thought I’d be traveling all over the world with a dog named Momo, taking pictures, making books and sharing my story with so many people, I’d definitely laugh a giddy laugh. The things around us give context to our memories, and when we encounter something similar years later, they can spark a nostalgia that chokes us up.
